Sustainability exhibition shows how young people are turning waste into practical solutions for cleaner, greener communities

Chorkor, a vibrant coastal community in Accra, is seeing encouraging change through the PRU Climate Action Project, an intervention by Prudential Life Insurance Ghana funded by the Prudence Foundation. On 20 May 2026, that progress was on full display at the PRU Climate Action Sustainability Exhibition, where students showcased how environmental education and community action can translate into practical, visible impact.

Student Innovation: Turning Trash into Treasure

At the exhibition, students demonstrated remarkable creativity by transforming waste into useful and attractive items, including wall hangings, shoe racks, cups, bins, dolls, bags and miniature building plans. Their work showed that discarded materials can be reimagined as practical solutions, while also promoting cleaner habits and a stronger sense of environmental responsibility.

Sustainability Clubs: Fostering Environmental Awareness

A major driver of this progress has been the sustainability clubs established in local schools. More than after-school groups, these clubs are helping to nurture a new generation of environmental advocates by teaching students about recycling, sustainable living, teamwork and community responsibility.

So far, 300 students from five schools have commenced club activities: St George’s Anglican Basic School, Mamprobi South 4 Basic School, St Moses Basic School, Presby Basic School and Chemuena Basic School.

At the exhibition, three schools presented their creations: St George’s Anglican Basic School, Chemuena Basic School and Mamprobi South 4 Basic School.

One standout concept came from Chemuena Basic School, where students used waste materials such as tyres and empty bottles, combined with bamboo and landscaping elements, to design an innovative playground. The project captured the essence of the initiative by showing how sustainability can improve everyday life while creating safer, more engaging spaces for children.

Community Impact: Support, Progress, and Future Needs

The project’s impact is already being felt across Chorkor. Community leaders, including the Chorkor Chief, have commended the initiative for bringing renewed hope and visible change to the area. While important challenges remain, including stream management, culvert improvement and the need for more household toilets, the exhibition highlighted the strong momentum that has been built through sustained investment, community engagement and youth participation.

Join the Movement!

The story emerging from Chorkor is a powerful reminder that meaningful change starts with awareness, action and consistency. By equipping young people to repurpose waste and think differently about their environment, the PRU Climate Action Project is helping to build a cleaner, brighter and more sustainable future for the community.
